About the case
This lawsuit claims that Visa and Mastercard network rules barred independent ATM operators from charging a lower access fee when a withdrawal could run over a cheaper competing network, so cardholders paid higher surcharges at non-bank ATMs. The defendants are Visa Inc., Visa U.S.A. Inc., Visa International Service Association, Plus System, Inc., Mastercard Incorporated and Mastercard International Incorporated. Visa and Mastercard deny they did anything wrong.
The class covers the US and its territories, with additional statewide classes for California, Illinois, Massachusetts and Michigan.
